General Requirements

California Qualifications - Testing Personnel

Blood Systems Laboratories performs sample testing for numerous blood banks in California. We are required to comply with California regulations for staff performing that testing. The following table is intended to assist in determining if applicants are qualified under California criteria. Complete transcripts are required of every applicant (including all transfer schools, not only the degree granting institution). License Limited To Qualifications

Chemistry
A baccalaureate or higher degree major in Chemistry
OR
A baccalaureate or higher with 25 semester units in chemistry including:
Analytical Chemistry or Quantitative Analysis
AND
Biochemistry

Note: Other sciences are not counted only Chemistry and Biochemistry.

Microbiology

A baccalaureate or higher degree in Microbiology or Bacteriology.
OR
A baccalaureate or higher with 24 semester units of sciences including chemistry, biology. At least 6 semester units in medical or pathogenic microbiology or bacteriology must be included. A course in immunology or serology may be accepted as a substitute for 3 or less of these required semester units.

Courses in Microbiology, Bacteriology, Immunology, Serology, Virology, Parasitology. (Course titles must reflect these topics.)


Toxicology

A baccalaureate or higher degree with designated major in chemistry.
OR
A baccalaureate or higher with 25 semester units in Chemistry. A course in Analytical Chemistry or Quantitative Analysis or equivalent shall be included.


Immunohematology

A baccalaureate or higher degree with designated major in Microbiology, Bacteriology, or Medical Technology or Clinical Sciences.
OR
A baccalaureate or higher degree with 24 semester units from the following:
Microbiology
Clinical Chemistry
Bacteriology
Genetics
Immunology or serology
Microtechnique
Virology
Instrumentation
Mycology
Statistics
Parasitology
Physics (maximum of 4 semester units)
Hematology
Cellular Biology
Biochemistry
At least 3 semester units in Immunohematology, Immunology, Serology or combination thereof shall be included. (Course titles must reflect these topics.)

Blood Systems, Inc. has two Donor Testing Service (DTS) laboratories. Our second laboratory, in Bedford, Texas was opened in 1999. Both DTS laboratories are Food and Drug Administration (FDA) licensed facilities. Both DTS laboratories also hold current certifications for the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Act (CLIA) as well as accreditation with the American Association of Blood Banks and the New York State Department of Health.
