Sample Requirements
Positive Sample Identification Integrity Maintaining sample identity is a critical control point in the donor testing process. We accomplish positive sample identification throughout our process with the use of uniquely bar-code labeled sample tubes, which are read by a Laboratory Information System (LIS) and our automated instruments.
BSL/DTS enhances positive sample identification through the acceptance of only original pilot tubes, appropriately bar-code labeled at the time of collection. Samples poured off or relabeled are not accepted. Sample identification numbers are routinely bar-code scanned into the Laboratory Information System and into all infectious disease and red cell serology testing equipment. Sample identification numbers along with screening test results are electronically transferred from the test equipment to the Laboratory Information System.
Criteria for Sample Acceptability Upon receipt of samples, BSL/DTS will assess blood specimens and shipping documents for compliance with sample requirements. BSL/DTS complies with the sample condition requirements specified by the testing reagent manufacturers.
Sample Tracking, Storage and Retrieval System The laboratories at BSL utilize the Laboratory Information System for sample tracking. This software system generates a variety of reports that allow appropriate selection of samples which require further testing.
