Sample Shipping Information

Leucoreduced RBC / Apheresis WBC Count

  1. Pack samples in accordance with local regulations for clinical/diagnostic specimens.
  2. Ship samples in a refrigerated state to CQC laboratory. Samples may be sent with donor panel or NAT samples as long as there is a couple of empty tube slots left between donor samples and CQC samples in the white box. The paperwork should be placed with the donor testing paperwork in the plastic bag.
  3. Samples received that do not conform to the stated sample requirements will not be tested.
  4. Frozen, grossly lipemic, clotted, or leaking samples will not be tested.

Factor VIII and Fibrinogen

Shipping

  1. Pack samples in accordance with local regulations for clinical/diagnostic specimens.
  2. Samples must be transported on dry ice to testing laboratory. Submit entire unit for assay. Four frozen cryoprecipitate units per pool or one frozen FFP unit.
  3. Samples which are received thawed, partially thawed or in broken containers will not be tested.

Packing

  1. The correct amount of dry ice required varies as to the size of shipping container used. If using a shipping container measuring approximately (14 1/2” X 10 1/2” X 10 1/2”), 14lbs. or 6.4 Kg of dry ice will last up to 48 hours. If using a shipping container measuring approximately (18 1/2” X 14 1/2” X 10 1/2”), 24 lbs. or 10.9Kg of dry ice will last up to 48 hours.
  2. Keep in mind that delays in flights do occur and a little extra dry ice is a good idea. It is also important to place the associated paperwork inside a plastic sleeve and place the sleeve inside the Styrofoam lid of the box so it won’t be cut during the opening of the box.

Bacterial Detection

Packing

  1. Ensure donation number, sample collection time and culture bottle ID barcode are on the BTA Sampling worksheet, DTS 121CQC.
  2. Place culture bottles into BacT/ALERT Double Transport Boxes (2 per box).
  3. Alternatively, pack bottles in protective wrap sufficient to prevent breakage during shipment.
  4. Obtain a large 4-mil plastic bag and place into an E-38UB shipping container.
  5. Place 2 absorbent pads into plastic bag with blue side down.
  6. Place 2 Polar Packs onto absorbent pads.
  7. Place 1-8 BacT/ALERT Transport Boxes (1-16 culture bottles) on top of Polar Packs.
  8. Alternatively, place wrapped bottles on top of Polar Packs.
  9. Place 2 Polar Packs on top of boxed or wrapped bottles.
  10. Place 2 absorbent pads, blue side up, on top of Polar Packs.
  11. Close plastic bag and secure with rubber band.
  12. Place leak-proof plastic bag containing copy of DTS 121CQC inside shipper on top of the sealed plastic bag.
  13. Retain original DTS 121CQC for your records.
  14. Place Foam Pad on top and push into place.
  15. Close the box and tape shut.

Shipping

  1. Place air bill, ground shipping label or BSL address label on top of the shipping container, Attention: CQC.
  2. Ship to BSL using routine procedures.

Blood Systems, Inc. has two Donor Testing Service (DTS) laboratories. Our second laboratory, in Bedford, Texas was opened in 1999. Both DTS laboratories are Food and Drug Administration (FDA) licensed facilities. Both DTS laboratories also hold current certifications for the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Act (CLIA) as well as accreditation with the American Association of Blood Banks and the New York State Department of Health.
